Project examples: Strategy

The following examples have been selected from the partners' portfolios. They illustrate the range of services provided by the European Partner Group in the area of Strategy.

Pan-Euro strategy

For a leading express and parcel freight carrier - whose European operations consisted of significant own operations in a few large European countries plus a series of recent acquisitions across the Continent - we developed a comprehensive European strategy, involving product redefinition, pricing, network redesign, and organization design. We were the driving force behind a large ‘turn-around team’ which engineered a significant improvement in profitability.

BU Intermodal Strategy

For a major Central European railway company we developed an intermodal strategy. We segmented the market into customer-defined segments (e.g., interport relay; direct port shuttles; backbone for high-speed networks; etc.), introduced a clearer focus on cost-competitive traction, and reviewed options for commercialization.

Competition analysis / financial modelling

A market model was developed in order to simulate competitive reactions. A Mobile Network Operator wanted to evaluate the potential competitive reactions to an aggressive price move. We developed a financial market model to evaluate the effects of a price reaction on the P&L of competitors and ran a number of reaction scenarios. This allowed the client to fine-tune its pricing strategy.

Strategies for an evolving Third-Party logistics industry

In a tough and evolving landscape of outsourced logistics services several leading players have turned to us over the years to understand the dynamics of customer behavior, help reshape their product offering, and clarify the economic linkages between their core business (e.g., freight forwarding; express freight; container shipping; etc) and their 'solutions' business.

Strategy Planning

For an International Telecoms Equipment Manufacturer we supported the strategic planning process for the EMEA region. A top-down market assessment evaluating key customers, main competitors and new trends in technology and regulation was used to validate the internal bottom-up planning. The team evaluated various strategic options to improve the market and competitive position of the client.

Growth strategy - European transport equipment

manufacturer

Developed a growth strategy to double the business. The team analysed customer and technology trends, competitor positions and internal capabilities. The strategy included action to consolidate manufacturing through acquisition, and expansion into downstream opportunities in product services and maintenance.

International strategy - leasing company

Working with a dedicated client team, we developed a strategy for a leasing company to expand both geographically and into new product categories. The analysis included assessing the existing market and competitors in 10 major countries, identifying the best opportunities based on market developments and the client's capabilities, and developing a strategic programme including financial projections.
